I started the community primarily because I don't like Facebook. I also like the idea of having a relatively distraction-free space on the Internet where people can actually get to know each other and share knowledge.
What I love about this platform is that it has no ads and provides an online space for networking and sharing resources, as well finding potential collaborators.
I chose the name "Start with a Book" because that's where I tend to start learning anything. But real learning involves more than just reading. It's fine to start with a book, but nothing replaces experience.
I've read books on writing (and crime writing, in particular), but it wasn't until I sat down and put fingers to keyboard that I was able write a novel.
Besides, simply reading or watching YouTube videos can only take you so far. Knowledge sharing and collaboration, however, can take you a lot farther.
I hope to create a place where we can share resources, network, and collaborate on specific projects.
One of my goals is to promote short crime fiction by creating anthologies. I've done this previously with guests from Season One of my podcast, the Crime Cafe. I've been a self-published author since 2009, so I'm fully conversant with the process.
I can also tell you that self-publishing isn't always a quick path to riches. However, there are methods of fundraising and marketing that go beyond the typical author newsletter or pre-launch tweets or whatever.
Crowdfunding is a smart way to build audience by finding people not only willing, but excited to support your work. It also requires planning and preparation.
I've previously crowdfunded twice and have a good deal of insight into what works and what doesn't.
We are here to work together toward our mutual success, as well as companionship and a shared purpose: to grow and develop as creators.
